Trinity Lutheran Church - History

This historic church celebrated its 100th year in 2009. The congregation itself goes back further, with the first formal Norwegian Lutheran service held in New Westminster in 1891.  At the time, the congregation consisted exclusively of Norwegian immigrants who came to Canada for the fishing industry.

Trinity’s historical archives contain a wealth of photos and documents that chronicle the history of Annieville, a community formed on the banks of the Fraser River at the turn of the 20th century.  The original church was built on Norum Point and served people from both sides of the Fraser River.  When the railroad needed the land, the church, as seen today, was built on 15 acres of land donated from the proceeds of the sale of the original Norum Point church.  The “new” church reflects the early fishing village roots of the congregation: the sanctuary’s Chancel is in the shape of a boat wheelhouse and the windows are placed as they would have been on a fishing boat.

Today, Trinity Lutheran Church is also home to a Korean Baptist congregation.
